Motorists Will See Daily Fatality Messaging Beginning Today
NASHVILLE – After record-setting reductions in the number of highway fatalities in Tennessee, the state is now seeing a dramatic increase in crash deaths so far in 2012. Preliminary reports show 288 people have died on Tennessee roadways from January 1 through April 27, 2012. During the same period last year, there were 27 fewer crash fatalities across the state.
Beginning today, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will begin running a daily roadway fatality count on overhead Dynamic Message Signs in the state’s urban areas, along with targeted safety messages reminding motorists to wear their seatbelts, obey the speed limit, and to not text and drive.
“Bottom line – this is an unacceptable increase, and I think it’s important that drivers know just how many people have already died on our roadways this year,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “It’s my hope that seeing this number will be a sobering reminder to all motorists and will help change the behaviors that contribute to these deadly crashes.”
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is also working to reduce fatalities. THP has instituted large scale seat belt enforcement efforts in each district in conjunction with increased DUI enforcement efforts.
“Each one of these fatalities represents someone’s child, mother, father, brother, sister or friend,” said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons. “We want to act now to prevent other families from suffering this kind of tragedy.”
THP Colonel Tracy Trott added, “Nearly half of this year’s fatalities involved motorists who were not wearing a seat belt, and we know many of those victims would have likely survived had they been. Troopers will be out in force and if you’re not buckled up – you will get a ticket.”
TDOT’s Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) will also be working with local law enforcement agencies across the state on targeted enforcement campaigns and safety education.
“Another startling statistic so far this year is the rise in motorcycle fatalities,” said GHSO Director Kendell Poole. “We know the mild winter and warm spring has likely led more cyclists to hit the roads earlier in the year. As we head into summer, we want to raise awareness in hopes of reversing this trend.”
TDOT is also using the preliminary crash data to determine where roadway safety improvements can be made. This includes installing additional rumble strips that alert drivers when they leave the travel lane, and the addition of reflective raised pavement markers that increase visibility. TDOT is also working with the Federal Highway Administration to develop a program that identifies locations where multiple fatal crashes have occurred.
There were 16 more fatalities in January 2012, compared to January 2011. In the month of March alone, there were 104 fatalities across the state, compared to 80 during March 2011. So far in April 2012, there have been 45 fatalities, 30 fewer than in April 2011.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is joining states across the nation to remind motorists not to barrel through work zones. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will spread that message statewide during National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 23-27) in an effort to improve safety in Tennessee’s interstate and highway construction and maintenance work zones.
“We are heading into the busiest construction time of the year, and there will be hundreds of active work zones across Tennessee,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Reducing speeds, staying alert, and exercising caution is the best way to ensure workers and motorists stay safe on our roadways.”
The spring and summer months provide perfect weather for highway work, and motorists will encounter work zones across Tennessee in downtowns, along interstates and in rural areas. Highway work zones can change frequently, making it even more important to pay attention to the road. Last year in Tennessee, fifteen people died in work zone crashes, twelve were either drivers or vehicle passengers, and three were construction workers.
“I was deeply saddened by the loss of two TDOT employees’ last year,” added Commissioner Schroer. These tragedies are sobering reminders of the hazards our highway workers face each and every day. I urge all motorists to remember highway crews are working to improve our roads to make your future commute better.”
The Tennessee Department of Transportation to date has lost 108 employees in the line of duty, most recently, two employees in 2011. TDOT HELP Operator Robert Nowicki was killed while assisting a motorist on Interstate 55 in West Memphis on June 20, 2011 and Highway Maintenance Worker Michael Dalton was killed setting up a work zone on Interstate 40 in Shelby County on September 8, 2011.
Each of TDOT’s regions will draw attention to Work Zone Awareness Week in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville by lighting several buildings across the state in orange. TDOT will also honor the workers who lost their lives by placing a remembrance plaque in their Regional Offices during Work Zone Awareness Week. Work zone safety messages will also be displayed on TDOT’s overhead Dynamic Message Signs on interstates in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville. TDOT has put together a video about the importance of work zone safety; the video can be seen here on TDOT’s YouTube page: http://youtu.be/j8cC9l3RFpM
Updated travel and construction information can be found on the TDOT SmartWay website at www.tn.gov/tdot/tdotsmartway or you may call 5‑1‑1. You can also receive traffic alerts via TDOT’s multiple Twitter feeds, including statewide traffic tweets @TN511 or any of TDOT’s other Twitter pages. Smartphone users can use the TDOT SmartWay Mobile website at http://m.tdot.tn.gov/SmartWay/ to access TDOT’s SmartWay cameras, messages displayed on overhead Dynamic Message Signs, and information on construction related lane closures and incidents on interstates and state routes.
As always, drivers are reminded to use all motorist information tools wisely and Know Before You Go!by checking travel conditions before leaving for their destination. Drivers should never tweet, text or talk on a cell phone while behind the wheel.

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) contract crews will close a three mile section of I-24 near downtown Nashville this weekend for a major bridge rehabilitation project over Main and Woodland Streets.

I-24 eastbound and westbound will be closed from the I-24/I-65 split north of downtown to the I-24/I-40 split east of downtown beginning Friday April 20, at 9:00 p.m.  The interstate will open no later than Monday April 23 at 5:00 a.m.

In addition, Main Street and Woodland Street, from South 5th Street to Interstate Drive, will be closed to perform bridge repairs. Detours will be in place.

*All work is weather dependent, but this weekend’s forecast of rain should not impact construction activities.

During the project’s first weekend interstate closure, workers will be removing deteriorated concrete from the bridge decks and setting barrier rail. The repairs are part of an $8.7 million project to rehabilitate bridges that were built in 1961. The project will require the total closure of a section of I-24 for 13 weekends this spring and summer.

Drivers passing through downtown Nashville will follow detour signs instructing them to take the west loop around downtown.  Project closures and detour maps are available at http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/i24bridges/maps.shtml.  A new East Nashville specific map, along with other maps to access downtown have recently been added.

TDOT will use its overhead Dynamic Message Signs to direct motorists around the closure. Drivers are advised to be alert and follow the posted directions. Law enforcement officers will be on site in the work zone to provide traffic control as the work is being completed. TDOT also asks drivers to use caution, reduce their speed and be alert to changing traffic conditions in work zones across the state.

This Phase will connect Carothers Parkway with Cool Springs Blvd/Oxford Glen Drive.

(Franklin, TN) - The next completed section of McEwen Drive will open on Friday, April 13th. City officials will mark the opening of Phase 3 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12 Noon. This phase includes the section of McEwen from Carothers Parkway to Cool Springs Blvd/Oxford Glen Drive.

“The Board of Mayor and Aldermen realized the importance of McEwen Drive and made it a top priority on their list of Capital Investment Projects,” says City Administrator Eric Stuckey. “Residents and businesses in the area have been anticipating the opening of this section and we thankful to TDOT for their assistance which helped us complete it.”

Construction of the road began in February 2011. The newly opened section is approximately one mile in length and includes four lanes, a median, sidewalks, and biking lanes on either side.

Total cost of Phase 3 construction is approximately $7.3 million with up to $4 million of the construction costs being funded by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. McEwen Drive Phase 3 was designed by Sullivan Engineering; The Parkes Companies was the prime contractor. Gresham Smith and Partners oversaw all daily construction activities and inspections of the project.

Two current projects which are also listed on the CIP Priority List are Nichol Mill and the widening of Mack Hatcher. The Nichol Mill project involves the realignment of Nichol Mill and the construction of a traffic signal at the intersection of Nichol Mill and Mallory Lane. It is expected to be completed in the next week. Mack Hatcher Widening is a TDOT project and involves the section of Mack Hatcher from Franklin Road to Murfreesboro Road. Improvements include widening the roadway to four lanes, the addition of a multi-use path, and street lighting. This project is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Those attending the McEwen Drive Phase 3 ribbon cutting at 12 Noon should enter McEwen Drive from Turning Wheel Lane (Directions from Carothers Parkway: East on Liberty Pike; North on Turning Wheel Lane; West on McEwen Drive). The road will be officially open to the public at approximately 1 p.m. on April 13th.

For more information on the ribbon cutting or the City’s road projects, call 615-791-3217.
