Nashville Rescue Mission Radiothon powered by Cumulus
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – All fives radio stations owned by Cumulus Nashville held a radiothon Tuesday to raise money for the Nashville Rescue Mission.
The airwaves of Super Talk 99.7, i106, 92Q, 95.5 the Wolf and 97.1 RQQ were commercial free.
Disc jockeys used the time that would normally be used for commercials to talk about and interview men and women who have been directly helped by the Nashville Rescue Mission.
Rescue Mission Director of Communications Cliff Treadway spent his morning on the radio talking about the mission.
He told News 2 is thankful for the opportunity to help raise money and awareness.
"This drives a lot of awareness and at the end of the day, it also helps us with those donations" he said.
The Nashville Rescue Mission does not accept any government money and relies on donations and volunteers.
The goal of Tuesday's radiothon was to raise $56,000, or $1,000 for every year the mission has been in operation.
"This being there 56th year, we would like to ensure there is another 56 years behind them," said Mark Sullivan, Vice President and General Manager of Cumulus Nashville. "It is important to give back to the community where we can see the donations that come right into an organization here and go right over to where they are being utilized."
A phone bank was set up at the Rescue Mission in south Nashville to take donations from callers but some, like Michael Griffin, stopped by in person to make a donation.
"I stayed here about a year so I always come back and do whatever I can because this is my home," said Griffin, who was homeless from 2005 until 2006.
He credits the Nashville Rescue Mission for helping turn his life around.
"I live in Gallatin, about 20 miles from here. I am married, I have a good job, life is good," said Griffin, adding, "but I don't forget where I come from."
With help from Cumulus Nashville, the Nashville Rescue Mission will raise money so they will be able to continue to provide help to those in need.
