29th annual downtown event features 200 artisans, crafters, two stages, two carnivals, lots of food
Downtown Franklin’s 29th annual Main Street Festival is April 28-29, featuring more than 200 artisans & crafters, two stages, two carnivals and a couple dozen food trucks to round out a full weekend of fun on one of America’s favorite Main Streets.
Hours for the free street festival are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, with the Fourth Avenue Street Dance continuing until 10 p.m., and all activities re-opening noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The area of the festival is Main Street from First Avenue to Fifth Avenue, and including portions of Third and Fourth Avenues with a carnival on N. Margin Street.
New Shuttle Service Offered
Presented by First Tennessee and produced by the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County and the Downtown Franklin Association, the weekend event is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors.
To help manage traffic, a new feature of the event is a shuttle service offered by the Franklin Transit Authority, with free parking at Harlinsdale Park on Franklin Road and at The People’s Church on Murfreesboro Road. Shuttle rides to the event are $1 for adults and 50 cents for children and seniors. Both sites will operate on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.; only the Harlinsdale site will operate on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

The Main Street Festival is produced by The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County and it division, the Downtown Franklin Association. Proceeds from the event are used to fulfill the mission of the organization, which is to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County and to promote the ongoing economic revitalization of downtown Franklin in the context of historic preservation.
The Main Street Festival is located in Historic Downtown Franklin, Tenn., exit No. 65 from I-65, three miles west to the Public Square.

Williamson County's state legislators will provide updates at the Williamson County Franklin Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Roundable Monday at 7:15 a.m. at the Williamson County Administrative Complex, County Commission Auditorium, 1320 West Main Street, Franklin.

State Senator Jack Johnson, and State Representatives Glen Casada, Phillip Johnson and Charles Sargent will report on activity in the state Legislature at the event that is free and open to the public.

The roundtable will include personal and business points of view from the audience; questions, answers and general discussion as time permits. These informative meetings are held monthly while the Legislature is in session and the public is invited.

Coffee and juice will be available.

Williamson County Parks and Recreation (WCPR) is pleased to announce a free open house on Friday, February 10 at the Indoor Arena at Crockett Park, 1485 Volunteer Pkwy., in Brentwood.

Stop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., meet the staff and learn about the many diverse programs now offered by WCPR at the facility. In addition to indoor soccer, lacrosse, rugby and flag football, the multi-purpose facility now hosts Fitness Boot Camp, fencing, golf clinics, Tiny Tots soccer camps, Zumba, and a new Rhythm and Spirit tumbling and cheer program for ages 2 to 17.

 

The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department opened the 29,000 square foot facility in March 2007. The arena contains a professional 60 by 30-yard field turf playing surface, a 30-person conference room and referee changing area. The facility is located within Crockett Park, off Crockett Rd. on Volunteer Pkwy. During the open house, registration information for all programs will be available along with facility tours. Brentwood Fire & Rescue will host Public Safety Day Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Kroger parking lot in Brentwood Place Shopping Center.

The department will present live demonstrations along with kids' activities, food and fire, police and EMS vehicle displays.

The fire station will hold an open house with guided tours.

The event is free.

One of Downtown Franklin’s favorite annual traditions, Pumpkinfest, has several new features for the Oct. 29, 2011 event on Main Street and the surrounding streets.

The 28th Annual Pumpkinfest presented by Bank of America is 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, with more than 75 arts and crafts vendors, a children’s activity area on 3rd Ave. S., Five Points stage, Sister Cities’ Great Pumpkin, Franklin Tomorrow Chili Cook-off and more.

Held in conjunction with Pumpkinfest is the second annual Franklin Battle of the BBQ presented by Heineken. For more information, please see www.franklinsbattleofthebbq.com

The street festival of Pumpkinfest is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Franklin’s Main Street from First  to Fifth Avenues. The fun continues until 9 p.m. on Main Street from 4th to 5th Avenues, with children’s activities and booths closing at 6 p.m.
Other activities include:
  • The Battle of the BBQ Peoples’ Choice tent on 4th Ave. S. invites the public is invited to taste pulled pork (at $5) or ribs ($1 per bone) with Heineken beers in the Heineys and Butts tent. Be sure to vote for your favorites!
  • The Franklin Tomorrow Chili Cook-off on 4th Ave. N.  from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on  Oct. 29. Tickets to taste chili from local organizations and restaurants will be available for $5 at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Main during the event.
  • Fall and holiday arts and crafts around the Public Square from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than 60 vendors will be displaying hand-crafted items perfect for fall and the holidays.
  • Cemetery Tours 7 to 9 p.m. Participants will walk from tombstone to tombstone at the Historic Resthaven cemetery on North Margin Street, hearing from costumed re-enactors about the people who are buried in certain graves. Tickets are $15 per person for adults, $5 for children, but the activity is not recommended for children under 6. Tickets are available from www.franklinonfoot.com and at the Heritage Foundation. Participants should bring a flashlight and wear close-toe shoes.
  • Costume Contest starts at 3 p.m. at the Five Points stage. It’s $1 for each entry and categories are pets, children ages 0-5, ages 6-13 and 14+. Enter at the headquarters tent on the Public Square between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Family Day at The Park at Harlinsdale Farm is happening Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will be plenty of activities for the entire family including kid’s entertainment and DJ music.

The day will include hay rides and children’s train rides, fishing/casting in the pond and a variety of games for all ages. The event will feature a petting zoo with farm animals and alpacas, and the Franklin Farmers Market will have free face painting. Don’t forget your camera for a photo opportunity with a horse replica!

Everything is free, but there will be a small fee for snack items which include: hot dogs, corn dogs, kettle corn, fried pies, Hawaiian ice and drinks.

“This event was well attended last year and continues to grow each year,” said Parks Director Lisa Clayton. “Hopefully we’ll have cooperative weather and this event will show off one of the City’s most beautiful parks and our friendly Parks staff. A Franklin landmark, Harlinsdale Farm, was established in 1935, and was once called the most significant historic farm associated with the modern Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. The Park at Harlinsdale is a passive park, maintaining and protecting the farm history.

Kids will have the opportunity to look at, climb on and sound all the bells and whistles on nearly 30 different kinds of large-scale construction and public service vehicles at Touch A Truck Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.n. at Thompson Station Church's parking lot.

At the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department event, D&H Railroad will offer kids rides on its trackless train for $1 a ride.

Kids can also paint a vehicle to take home at the free craft tent and check out a variety of entertainers on the performance stage, such as musicians, magicians and more. Door prizes will also be given away with cool items such as motorized kids vehicles.

Williamson County Public Library will be host for Passport to the Word: Native American Culture Sunday at 2 p.m.
This event features story-telling, dancing, and a show-and-tell of native American artifacts, foods, games, instruments, and more.
Charles Robinson, artist and Franklin resident, will lead the presentation. Passport to the World is presented by Sister Cities of Franklin and Williamson County, Tennessee, Inc., whose mission is to build global relationships, share cultural and educational experiences, and inspire economic growth within our community.
