LOCAL WNBA STAR TO SHARE SKILLS IN BASKETBALL MINI-CAMPS

Williamson County Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce that local basketball standout and former WNBA player Karen Booker will conduct ten basketball skills mini-camps at the Academy Park Gym, 120 Everbright St. in Franklin. Camps will be held in three-hour sessions on Saturdays. Participants can choose from camps focusing on offense, shooting, defense, ball-handling, and post skills. Camps for ages 8 to 12 will be from 9 a.m. to noon; ages 13 to 17 will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each camp is $45, and limited to 12 participants. Registration is now open.

Booker was a first-team all-state player at Franklin High School. She went on to play at Vanderbilt University and was all-SEC, third team All-American and second leading all-time rebounder. Booker also played in the World Games and came home with a gold medal for the US team. In the WNBA, Booker played with the Utah Starzz and the 1998 league champion Houston Comets. She has coached at the pro and college levels, serving at Cal Poly and Sewanee and as an assistant at Vanderbilt, Nevada and Colorado State.

Calling all bands! Audition CD's are now being accepted for Williamson County Parks and Recreation’s third annual Battle of the Teen Bands competition which will be held in the auditorium of Independence High School.

Interested teen bands are encouraged to submit their best audition CD and band photo to Longview Recreation Center, Attn. Darlene Monk, 2909 Commonwealth Drive, Spring Hill, TN 37174. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Friday, August 17.

Judges will narrow down the submissions to four bands that will compete the night of the event for great prizes and the title of this year’s “Best Teen Band."  All band members must be 13-18 years old, and must be enrolled in high school on the date of the event.  The Battle of the Bands will take place Saturday, September 8 beginning at 6 p.m.  For more information, call (615) 302-0971, ext. 16.

Calling all pint-sized athletes, ages 3 to 7! You can run, bike and get wet in your very own Mighty Tikes Triathlon on Saturday, June 2! Register now for this fun family event presented by the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road. Check-in time is 7:30 a.m. with a race time of 8 a.m.

The crowd will cheer on their favorite pint-sized athletes as they peddle through a bicycle obstacle course, transition to a running portion and then dash through sprinklers on their way to the finish line. Each child will receive an official triathlon medal and t-shirt. Children must be accompanied by parents, and all racers are required to bring a tricycle or bicycle (maximum bike size 16”) and helmet to the event. Bring your cameras for award-winning photo opportunities!

Pre-registration is required and will end May 25 or when the event is full. Registration may be made in person or by speaking with the receptionist at (615) 790-5719, ext. 10. The entry fee is $8 per child, and payment must be made within five days of registering or by May 25. Space is limited for this event and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Williamson County Parks ad Recreation still has spaces available at its Bethesda, Fairview, Grassland, Hunters Bend and Nolensville camp sites, and has extended  registration opportunities for you before the Summer Camp program starts in June.  Please take advantage of these dates and times to come in and get your children registered for our outstanding summer program.

Please download, print and complete the Registration Form Packet (1 per family) and a Medical Information Form (1 per child) to bring with you to registration.

At the time of Registration, you will be required to pay a $25.00 Registration Fee per child as well as a minimum of 3 days @ $17.00 per day, per child.

Outdoor pool passes for Williamson County Parks and Recreation facilities are now on sale for the 2012 summer swim season!

Outdoor pool passes provide access to outdoor pools and indoor facilities at the Franklin Recreation Complex, the Fairview Recreation Complex and the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill from May 29 through September 2.

At the end of the season, passes are transferable to an annual pass, for an additional fee. Passes must be converted by September 30, 2012. If you have a WCPR annual facility pass, admission to outdoor pools is included.

Passes will be available from May 1 through June 17 for $90 for Williamson county residents and $180 for out-of-county residents. After June 17, passes are $100 for county residents and $200 for out-of-county residents. Passes may be purchased at the Franklin, Fairview and Longview facilities during business hours.

Join the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department at the Longview Recreation Center, 2909 Commonwealth Drive in Spring Hill, and enjoy a FREE indoor concert by the Williamson County Community Band on Sunday, May 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Nothing beats live musical entertainment, and the community band delivers- children and adults alike will want to tap their feet to the beat, so bring out the whole family!

The free concert is open to the public. The almost 50-member Williamson County Community Band performs marches, concert pieces and jazz under the expert direction of band leader Ken Krause.

Registration is now open for Williamson County Parks and Recreation’s adult soccer leagues at the Robert A. Ring Indoor Soccer Arena, 1878 Downs Blvd., in Franklin. A coed league will play on Wednesday nights beginning May 16, and the team registration fee of $400 is due by May 2.

Men’s and women’s leagues start June 4, and a team registration fee ($400) is due by May 22. Women will play on Monday and Thursday nights; men will play on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Registration for adult soccer leagues is first-come, first served. Players must be 18 years old to participate. For more information, call Joseph Leray at (615) 790-5792.

The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department is ready to jump into summer with “’Round the World!” This seven-week day camp of adventure, education, athletics, creativity and entertainment is offered Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., June 4 through July 20 (no camp on July 4), for youth ages 5 to 12. (Children must be 6 by September 30, 2012 and cannot be 13 before June 4, 2012.)

Fully staffed camps are held at six elementary schools throughout Williamson County to accommodate an average of 1,500 participating children. Parents may choose a camp location from the following elementary schools: Grassland, Hunters Bend, Lipscomb, Nolensville, Bethesda and Fairview.

Various registration dates and sites coordinate with the school/camp locations of the parent’s choice. All registration is first come-first served and will close when programs are full. Parents can save time by downloading and completing all required forms from www.wcparksandrec.com prior to the registration session.

Registration for the Hunters Bend and Grassland Elementary sites is on Monday, April 30 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until full) at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road.

Registration for the Lipscomb and Nolensville sites is on Wednesday, May 2 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until full), also at the Franklin Recreation Complex.

If openings are still available for the Hunters Bend, Grassland, Lipscomb or Nolensville sites after Wednesday, May 2, registration will continue at the Franklin Recreation Complex on Friday, May 4 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until all available spots have been filled. Please call ahead to confirm availability: (615) 790-5719, ext. 38.

Registration for the Bethesda site is on Tuesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 3 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until full) at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Drive.

Registration for the Fairview site is Tuesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fairview Recreation Complex, 2714 Fairview Blvd.

To be eligible for the summer camp program, parents or legal guardians of all campers must live or work in Williamson County and must register in person during the designated times at the locations listed.

Camp fees are $17 per day, per child, with a one-time registration fee of $25 each. Parents are required to pay the registration fee and for at least three days of camp fees per child at the time of registration. Campers may then pay as they go; may purchase multi-day units or “block days” to use whenever they wish; or may receive a discount when purchasing the entire seven weeks up front for $510 for the first camper (a savings of $85) and $450 for each additional camper (an extra savings of $60).

Financial assistance is available, if needed, for Williamson County residents or Williamson County Government employees. The deadline for aid applications is Wednesday, April 18.
