You need JavaScript enabled to view it Website ALS can affect a person’s ability to speak, and this can without a doubt be one of the most frustrating and challenging issues to face. People with ALS can suffer from impairments ranging from slurred and slowed speech to a total inability to speak. It’s easy to lose hope. Without effective communication, life is extremely difficult, lonely, and depressing, not just for the person with ALS, but for family, caregivers and friends. But support and consultation provided by The ALS Association can help break the communication barrier and give people with speech difficulties effective ways to express their thoughts and needs. Products are available that are geared to the individual’s particular capabilities and needs. Options include letter boards, eye gaze boards, and laser pointers used with communication boards. There are also speech generation devices that allow users to type their thoughts and have their words audibly produced. Some technology can be connected to a PC or telephone and even used as a universal remote control for common household appliances. The ALS Association also provides a wide range of educational programs to ALS Association Chapters and ALS Association Centers, and to hospitals, emergency departments and hospice organizations to raise awareness about the communication challenges of people with ALS. It holds conferences for speech pathologists, assistive technologists and other allied healthcare professionals. The programs are supported in part by a grant from DynaVox Technologies. For more information about The ALS Association’s Assistive Technology Consultation Program, please contact Alisa Brownlee at 215.631.1877 or abrownlee@alsa-national.org. |
